Blog Action Day 2008 – Poverty

October 15, 2008 was Blog Action Day and the topic of discussion is “poverty”. I missed the boat on this one as I was literally digging through my archives for the photo below, taken on August 7, 2005. I’ve been meaning to do something with this photo ever since I took it and today seemed fitting.

We’ve cloned sheep, gone to the moon and back, and we almost have flying cars! How does poverty still exist in this day and age?

And now I’d like to share some links that make me wanna go out right now and do something worthwhile like eliminate poverty amongst other things:

1. Nowtopia.

Chris Carlsson, Author of Nowtopia: How Pirate Programmers, Outlaw Bicyclists and Vacant-Lot Gardeners are Inventing the Future Today was interviewed by David Suzuki. The main gist of the interview is about people using their own time and technological know-how to perform meaningful work outside of the marketplace to improve life in the here and now for everyone, a Nowtopia. It sounds like it could be a place without poverty.

Listen to the interview here. The synopsis of the program can be found on cbc.ca.

2. Slow down and life will get better.

Carl Honore, Author of the book In Praise of Slowness: Challenging the Cult of Speed discusses how the speed of everyday things degrades our health, productivity and quality of life. Check it out. After watching the video I’ll bet you’ll slow down….atleast for a little while.

Carl Honore: Slowing Down in a World Built for Speed

Take care.
Ben.
